The Independent Wire

An independent look at today's top political stories. This site is truly an independent slant on the issues, if it appears to be slanted to the left that's only because the other side has been wrong at an unusually high rate as of late.

Here is a link to a fascinating article written by a self-described white trash cracklet from rural Idaho who offers his analysis of what makes white, lower class, uneducated people form their belief systems.

It's a long article, and the beginning might seem random, but once you see how the author ties it together it's worth reading a second time. This is a realistic down and dirty opinion on small town life, the struggle of classes, and how this relates to the political questions that so many Democrats and Independents have about why some people are stupid enough to vote for George Bush. However, the answers are not as neat and comfortable as the educated, blue state Democrats, who probably feel superior, would like them to be.

Bageant's not from Idaho. He's from Virginia. Read some of his other work on his website and you'll know things like that.

From Idaho, grew up in Idaho, lives in Idaho - I wasn't concerned with semantics. His article seems to be written about growing up in Idaho where he says he worked on a hog farm, and he uses this as an example to talk about his experiences growing up in a poor, rural, white trash area, so that is the important point. Not whether or not he actually lives in Virginia now as an old man.

Like I said, you really need to read bageant's work before posing as an authority on him. He frequently write about how his family has been in Winchester, Virginia for centuries. He grew up there, was away for years, and has now returned. He knows the place thoroughly, which gives his writing much of its power.

Seriously, you should take a look at his site--it's excellent. There's much to think about there.

I will check out his site, and I might read this book that he's got coming out which is referenced at the end of the article. However, you, anonymous, kill me. I hardly would say I was posing as an authority on him. I wrote two paragraphs that basically supported an article he wrote and I recommended to others to read it.
